Exploring the Mystery of Matter and Antimatter Through Electrons in Molecules

Our universe is filled with matter, yet according to current theories, matter and antimatter should have been produced in equal amounts in the early universe and should have annihilated each other. Why did only matter survive? One of the keys to solving this mystery may lie in a phenomenon known as CP symmetry violation.
To investigate this, experiments are being conducted to search for tiny effects associated with the nuclear Schiff interaction (NSI) in molecules containing heavy nuclei. Accurately interpreting experimental data requires precise theoretical predictions of how electrons behave near and within the nucleus. However, conventional computational methods relied on approximations based solely on information about the electronic wavefunction at the center of the nucleus. This raised concerns about whether these methods could accurately describe electron behavior throughout the finite spatial extent of heavy nuclei, particularly near their surfaces.

To address this, the study derived a new analytical expression that enables the relevant electronic contribution to be evaluated without relying on the conventional approximationa
Applying this new method to analyze three molecules containing heavy atoms (205TlF, 225RaO, and 256LrF) revealed a surprising fact: the conventional approximation substantially overestimated the electronic contribution near the nuclear surface (discrepancies exceeding 50% for RaO and 300% for LrF were observed). Furthermore, the study proposed a method for constructing a new computational dataset to accurately calculate electron behavior both inside and outside heavy nuclei.

This research demonstrated that the conventional approximation can lead to substantial errors when evaluating electronic contributions within heavy nuclei. The newly derived computational model enables high-precision calculations that account for the spatial extent of atomic nuclei. By combining these results with information about the nuclei, this study provides a more reliable theoretical foundation for accurately interpreting data from molecular NSI experiments.
