Micro heater combining silicon optical circuit and cobalt metal

Shimizu Lab succeeded in measuring from the change in resistance of a metal that light reaches a region of 0.4 micrometers in width of a silicon optical waveguide (Si plasmonic waveguide) in which cobalt, a transition metal, is laminated, and can be heated to 243 °C by absorbed light.

Toward Higher Density, Speed, and Functionality of Optical Integrated Circuits

We clarified the temperature rise when light reaches Si (silicon) optical waveguides (Si plasmonic waveguides) stacked with transition metal Co (cobalt) and the absorbed light generates heat by measuring the change in resistance of the metal. When 6.3 milliwatts of light, equivalent to the output of a Class 3R laser pointer, was input, a local heater with a length of 8 micrometers and a width of 0.4 micrometers reached a maximum temperature of 243 °C, exceeding the reported temperature. This is a promising research result for the realization of ultra-compact optical switches that are essential for optical wiring and optical integrated circuits in which the wiring of electronic circuits is converted to light, and optical memories that temporarily store information on the strength and weakness of light. Application to lab-on-a-chip and on-chip optical sensors in fields such as biotechnology and chemistry is also expected.
