Measurement of the Shear Strength of Fly Ash Powder Beds (for Stable Power Supply)

Not only power plants that use solid fuels, but also various combustion plants will be required to reduce the environmental burden and recover energy at high efficiency in the future. The problem of high temperature adhesion of ash particles discharged with flue gas is currently a major issue in combustion plants around the world, but in most cases, countermeasures involving trial and error are still being taken. Measurement of the tensile and shear strength of powder layers is expected to reveal the adhesion and deposition mechanisms of ash particles at high temperatures and contribute to the stable and long-term operation of combustion plants.

This research was conducted by the research team of Nanami Aoki (Sumitomo Heavy Industries, Ltd., Doctoral student ), Yohei Okada, and Hidehiro Kamiya . They have developed a new device that can measure the shear strength of a powder layer (the force acting parallel to the surface) as a method to directly analyze this. This was first achieved by using both the university’s ability to decompose, organize, and evaluate phenomena and the company’s knowledge of models and equipment manufacturing. A particular feature of the device is that it reproduces the temperature distribution near the surface of a heat exchanger in an actual plant by fabricating an air-cooled structure. The results of this research have been published in the American Chemical Society’s ACS Sustainable Chemistry & Engineering (2020/12) and featured in the Supplemental Cover of the same journal. http://pubs.acs.org/doi/10. 1021/acssuschemeng.0c05280
