In alignment with Japan\u2019s goal to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, the lab focuses on producing clean energy and biomaterials from &#8220;biomass&#8221;\u2014renewable resources such as wood, seaweed, and food waste.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A key research project is the <strong>development of technology to produce sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) from biomass<\/strong>. Converting vegetable oil into aviation fuel typically requires a three-step chemical process\u2014hydrodeoxygenation, isomerization, and cracking\u2014each demanding its own catalyst. Through extensive trial and error, the Qian Lab successfully engineered a <strong>single catalyst capable of driving all three reactions in a single step<\/strong>. This drastically lowers production costs\u2014the biggest hurdle in biomass commercialization.
