Work <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I am conducting atmospheric chemistry research on aerosols at the Institute of Multidisciplinary Research for Advanced Materials, Tohoku University. \u201cAerosols\u201d refers to particulate matter suspended in air. You may have seen the term \u201caerosol transmission\u201d in news reports; that refers to infections caused when pathogen-containing particles remain airborne. PM2.5, yellow sand (Asian dust), and pollen are also types of aerosols.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My research focuses on the possibility that aerosols play a significant role in climate change, including global warming. Aerosols scatter and absorb incoming solar radiation, and they can grow into cloud droplets\u2014processes that are closely linked to climate formation. In other words, aerosols are thought to have a cooling effect on the planet by counteracting warming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the magnitude of aerosols\u2019 impact on climate is not yet well established. To clarify this, I employ an in situ measurement approach: reproducing atmospheric processes in the laboratory and examining individual aerosol particles in detail to obtain accurate data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Conventional experimental methods produce only averaged data, so my approach is expected to yield higher\u2011certainty measurements. This innovative work was recognized when I was selected in the first cohort of JST\u2019s FOREST grant program**.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Research Activities at TUAT <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While I was a student I studied in the Department of Chemical Engineering (now the Department of Applied Physics and Chemical Engineering) at Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology. My grades were poor at the time, and I caused trouble for my supervising professor, Professor Wuled Lenggoro\u2014but ultimately I became captivated by aerosol research, which has remained my focus ever since. In particular, being able to tackle an advanced, government\u2011supported project investigating the impacts of aerosols on plants and humans\u2014collaboratively conducted by the engineering and agriculture faculties\u2014was a decisive factor in my decision to pursue a research career. TUAT\u2019s low student\u2011to\u2011faculty ratio creates close relationships and strong support from faculty; that environment is one of the university\u2019s greatest strengths.
