wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>INTRODUCTION OF TUAT LENGGORO LAB<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>1.  Overview of the research group<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since the lab (research group) was established in January 2007 at Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology, more than 50 students have graduated or completed their studies and are active in a wide variety of fields. Currently, 14 students (3 thesis students, 5 master&#8217;s students, and 6 doctoral students) are enrolled in the group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>2. Research interests<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Particle engineering is our specialty. Focusing on the behavior of particles suspended in air or liquid, we have proposed energy-saving manufacturing methods for particulate materials and their mass production, as well as methods for particle size measurement and thermal analysis of nanoparticles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The educational and research policy of the group is to consider what engineering should do as an academic discipline to address global-scale social issues (resources, water, food production, climate, and ecosystems). The following approaches have been used in our research so far.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>2.1 Material process technology using the balance of forces<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The synthesis and immobilization of fine particles using the control technology of external force such as electrostatic force are developed. An example is pulsed DC electrophoresis (PEPD). In aqueous (water) systems, the behavior of bubbles generated by electrolysis is a challenge, but in the PEPD method, cracks in the particulate film are hardly observed even after heating due to the formation of a uniform film. PEPD was also developed to immobilize nanoparticles inside the holes of porous substrates (holes less than 100 nm in diameter) in water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition, we discovered the phenomenon of droplet size reduction by introducing a group of droplets into convective flow from a high temperature surface. By applying this phenomenon, the particle of the metal oxide of submicron or less was able to be synthesized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>2.2 Particle Engineering and Transport Phenomena for Agricultural Studies<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2008, we designed and constructed a system for the deposition of air pollutant model particles on the leaf surface of trees growing in two years, as part of a research project entitled &#8220;Human Plant Effects&#8221; funded by the KAKENHI Grant. In the development of this exposure device, a number of byproduct technologies were developed. For example, in the combination of the integration of airborne nanoparticles and Raman spectroscopy, a new concept of residual &#8220;organic molecular layers&#8221; has been proposed. In addition, taking the leaf structure as a hint, we have been developing a device for collecting fine particles in the air environment without using a suction pump.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There were also serendipitous findings from studies of the atmospheric environment. When a plate was introduced into a candle flame, it was discovered that the soot particles dispersed in both water and alcohol. The application of these particles led to the development of a synthesis technology for hydrophilic and hydrophobic membranes and an ultrasonic cleaning method that enabled the removal of submicron particles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Atmospheric environment study becomes a trigger, in respect of mass transfer inside and outside of plants, control of liquid transfer in soil and biomass, circulation-type food production system (The Cabinet Office, &#8220;Moonshot&#8221; on Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries R &amp; D project), and we cooperate with several agricultural science research groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>3. Features of the group<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Each student designs an original theme and conducts research and experiments. In graduation\/bachelor theses and master&#8217;s theses, it takes many months to design a theme and build an apparatus, and the results may not be ready in time for the final presentation. We believe it is important to develop problem-setting skills rather than problem-solving skills, to experience meaningful failures and learn from those failures, and to expand one&#8217;s thinking beyond the boundaries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The diversity of research topics means that the seminar presenters in the group are the most knowledgeable about the topics. Students participating in the seminar can develop their &#8220;questioning skills&#8221; by asking questions without knowing much about the content beforehand, and since students do not have accumulated knowledge simply because they are senior, a lively question and answer session develops regardless of whether they are senior or junior. In order to maintain diversity in the group, we have accepted a certain percentage of international students or graduate students from different fields (e.g., physics, biology, etc.). In addition, there are always several doctoral students and non-Japanese researchers enrolled in the group.
