They achieved this by heating the wafers in water for a short time and then in air for a longer time. The mechanical cutting process reduced the quality of the wafers, which affected how well they could convert light into electricity. Their method improved the quality of the wafers, especially near the cut edges. They used a simple model to analyze the results. They found that our method reduced the loss of electric charge at the cut edges, while increasing it slightly at the surface, likely because of the electric field effect.
